What people are saying:

I found the training to be very helpful. It gave me great guidance on what my state should be doing more of...specifically, contract monitoring.
Rep. Julie Casimiro
Rhode Island House of Representatives
This was an amazing crash course in how legislators and legislative staff can better oversee and improve government programs. There are multiple examples, interviews, and resources to help provide a broad view of how states across the country approach oversight, as well as extremely helpful assignments to make you think about your own state.
Tanner Cox
Lead Performance Auditor, Utah Office of the Legislative Auditor General
The Oversight Training Program is a great resource for anyone in state government who conducts oversight regularly. Whether you are new in your oversight career or an experienced professional, the program offers valuable takeaways and perspective that you can apply to your work.
Matt Thomas
Senior Analyst, Pennsylvania Legislative Budget and Finance Committee
Legislative oversight is accountability in action. The Levin Center's Oversight Training Program was an insightful and accessible means to being introduced to the critical tools.

What is it?

The Levin Center for Oversight and Democracy launched the State Oversight Academy (SOA) in March 2023 to build a national community dedicated to advancing bipartisan, fact-based oversight at the state level. Our online Oversight Training Program brings an in-depth SOA workshop to you on demand!

What will I learn?

Over nine lessons, you will learn how to conduct an in-depth oversight investigation using the six avenues of oversight (analytic bureaucracies, committees, appropriations, administrative rule review, advice and consent, and contract monitoring). Each lesson includes an instructional video (typically 20 to 40 minutes long), interviews with practitioners and academics, examples of best practices in the states, and a short assignment to explore how you can apply the lesson in your legislature.

How do I enroll?

Enroll before January 1, 2026, for only $150! Offices/legislatures enrolling 4+ people should contact the Levin Center for preferential pricing! Groups interested in a collaborative and custom classroom environment should contact Kyle Bule.
